THE SULZER KNEE REPLACEMENT LAWSUIT
The Sulzer knee replacement, manufactured by Sulzer Orthopedics, is an artificial joint that is used to replace the natural knee in patients whose knees can no longer function normally.
SULZER KNEE REPLACEMENT RECALL
In May 2001, Sulzer Orthopedics recalled approximately 1,600 knee replacements due to a manufacturing defect. The defective knee replacements were contaminated with an oil residue used in the manufacturing process. The residue inhibited the bonding of the knee replacements to the bone and, as a result, many patients experienced pain and difficulty walking. Sulzer Orthopedics was also forced to recall its hip replacement device for a similar reason.
SULZER KNEE IMPLANT RECALL LAWSUITS
Since the Sulzer knee and hip recall, many product liability lawsuits have been filed against Sulzer Orthopedics. In an effort to settle these lawsuits quickly, a class action settlement exceeding $1 billion has been offered to victims of the recalled knee and hip replacement.
